About Wings of the Steppe Project
Wings of the Steppe is a public scientific initiative that brings together people who care about the future of birds and the natural heritage of Kazakhstan.

Members of the initiative group Wind of Wanderings and the public foundation Wings have been conducting systematic observations of birds in Kazakhstan for several years, studying their distribution, migration patterns, and changes in population numbers. As part of this work, the online platform wingeds.world was created, where photographs and bird observations from across the country are published.
Why we do this
Птицы — важнейшие индикаторы состояния экосистем. Их миграции, численность и распределение по территориям отражают изменения климата, ландшафтов и среды обитания.

Наша цель — собрать достоверные, системные данные о птицах Казахстана и сделать этот процесс открытым, увлекательным и доступным для широкого круга людей.
Observation Platform
An online platform wingeds.world was created to publish and store observation data.
Participants upload:

  • photographs of birds;
  • date and location of observation;
  • species identification.

All observations are verified by experts, ensuring high scientific value and data quality.

Birdwatching Wings of the Steppe
Since May 2025, the Wings of the Steppe project has been running on a permanent basis in the format of birdwatching.
Participants will:
  • photograph birds in different regions of Kazakhstan;
  • upload observations to the platform;
  • earn points and achievements for activity and accuracy.

The gamified format makes participation engaging and helps collect valuable data about birds during migration seasons.
Sector-Based Bird Census
One of the key directions of the project is sector-based bird monitoring.

Each participant can:
  • choose a grid square on the map;
  • record observed species throughout the year;
  • build a long-term picture of the bird diversity of a specific territory.

This approach allows researchers to track changes over time and obtain valuable data for nature science and conservation.

Technology and Accessibility
We understand that not every participant is an expert in bird identification.
Therefore, the project is developing an AI system capable of:

  • identifying bird species from photographs;
  • recognizing birds by their calls and songs.

This will allow anyone, regardless of their level of expertise, to contribute to the observation and conservation of birds.
Project Mission
To preserve Kazakhstan’s ornithological diversity by uniting people, knowledge, and modern technologies.

We are creating a space where amateur observation becomes part of a large scientific process, and caring for nature becomes a conscious choice.
